Fevers are a part of life. As a rule, we seem to fear having a fever and we have been trained to panic and immediately reach for the acetaminophen and ibuprofen to reduce the fever as quickly as possible. I’m a mom – I know exactly how it is! I have learned, however, that fevers are a good thing. Having a fever means that your body is recognizing an infection of some sort, and has kicked into gear to fight off the invading problem, like a cold, the flu or an ear or sinus infection. Whenever someone in my family has a fever, we use this natural treatment to help the body fight the infection. With this trick you can help your body do its job and get rid of your fever with socks.
Microbes that can cause illness thrive at the body’s normal temperature. The fever elevates the body’s temperature so that the invaders can’t ‘re-populate’, and it causes the immune system to stand at attention and create the much needed white blood cells for fighting off the invasion. By trying rid of the fever too soon, you miss the opportunity of the body doing it’s job and letting the fever run its course to lessen the severity and length of the cold or flu.
I recognize that having a fever is a very uncomfortable thing, and we don’t like to be uncomfortable for any amount of time. However, by using things like over-the-counter fever reducers, especially right out of the gate, you are suppressing the very thing that the body needs to develop stronger immunity and do what it was created to do.
Many years ago I learned about a treatment for fevers that has been proven in my home over and over – so much so that my grown children reach for it when they need to because they know it works! It is even a great option for dealing with sinus pain and pressure that may or may not be accompanied by a fever. We call it ‘The Socks’.
- Take a pair of cotton socks, get them wet and ring them out.
- Place them on your feet (yes, I am well aware of how miserable it feels, and how challenging it can be to put wet socks ON)!
- Then take a pair of wool socks – preferably 100% wool if you can get a hold of them. Place them over the wet cotton socks. Your feet will get cold because, let’s face it, you’ve got wet socks on your feet, and you have a fever – it’s going to feel extra cold!
- Try to relax and wait. You may need to re-wet and re-put on the cotton socks a few more times because the fever in your body will heat up and dry out the socks. As the socks dry, re-do steps 1-4 as many times as necessary until the fever breaks.
As your body begins to try to warm up your feet, it will pull the fever from all other parts of your body down to your feet. This, in turn, eventually pulls the fever from your body, while allowing your immune system to do it’s job without covering up the fever with medications and suffering from the effects on your organs that fever reducers can cause. It’s an effective way to reduce a fever, break up sinus pressure, and build your immune system without the cost or nasty effects of medications if you so choose. Check it out the next time someone in your family has a fever – you’ll be amazed!
